March 27, 2026
Dr. Nazish Sayed, MD, PhD, Associate Professor in the Division of Vascular Surgery and a faculty member of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, has been awarded the National Institutes of Health–National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NIH-NHLBI) Emerging Investigator Award (R35).
The R35 Emerging Investigator Award is a highly competitive program that supports approximately 20 investigators nationwide each year. The seven-year award, totaling approximately $5.4 million, will support Dr. Sayed’s research program titled, “Unraveling Endothelial-Cardiomyocyte Crosstalk in Cardiomyopathy: An Integrated Multimodal Approach.”
“This award will allow us to redefine cardiomyopathy by understanding how endothelial dysfunction drives cardiac disease and to identify new therapeutic strategies,” said Sayed.
The NHLBI R35 program is designed to promote scientific productivity and innovation by providing long-term support and flexibility to experienced principal investigators. The award supports a research program rather than a single project and is intended to enable investigators to pursue extended, high-impact research aligned with the NHLBI mission, including studies related to heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders.
