Jean-Marc Alsac, MD

Agnis Zvaigzne, MD

Maarit A. Heikkinen, MD

Jean-Marc Alsac, MD, Agnis Zvaigzne, MD, and Maarit A. Heikkinen, MD have spent one year in basic vascular research in Dr. Zarins' laboratory from July 2003 to August 2004.

Dr. Alsac is a vascular surgeon from France and he is interested in the research in vascular disease related vascular wall remodeling. He performed multiple experiments in animal models, such as experimental uterine artery remodeling in pregnant rabbits, and experimental aortic aneurysms in rats, and minimal invasive endoscopy vascular procedures in pigs.

Dr. Zvaigzne is an endocrinologist from Latvia and he is interested in vascular diseases related to diabetes mellitus. He performed experiments involving vascular remodeling in Zuker rats, a diabetic model in rats. He analyzed activities of matrix metalloproteinases in this model. He also participated in various other projects.

Dr. Heikkinen is a vascular surgeon from Finland and she is interested in the role of tensile stress in vascular remodeling. She performed experimental aortic aneurysm in rats and characterized mechanical and morphological properties.

All these wonderful investigators worked collectively as a team and contributed to the vascular laboratory significantly. They also actively participated in clinical meetings, seminars, and surgical procedures.
